MaRITeC-X project team and Municipality of Larnaca organised a meeting at the Zenon Coordination Centre between Dr. Nicholas C. Makris, Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering and Director of the Center for Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and major political and economic stakeholders in marine and maritime issues. Larnaca Mayor Mr. Andreas Vyras and members of the MaRITeC-X Teaming project met on Tuesday, August 21, 2018, with the Rector of the University of Cyprus Mr. Constantinos Christofides. The MaRITeC-X Consortium presented the plan for the establishment of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute in an extraordinary ceremony that took place on Friday 13th of July, in the evening, at the Visitors’ Centre of the Ancient Kition archaeological area in Larnaka. More than 100 invited guests attended the event entitled “Our Ocean Space Odyssey”, including government officials, members of the parliament, ambassadors, academics and representatives of the marine and maritime industry. MaRITeC-X project launches the event “Our Ocean Space Odyssey” and presents the plan for the establishment of the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI). Friday, 13th of July, at 19:30, in the Visitors’ Centre of the Ancient Kition archaeological area in Larnaka. MaRITeC-X project sets in motion our efforts to build in Cyprus a Centre of Excellence, the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI). By August 2018, the business plan of the Centre will be submitted to the EU. This will be followed in November 2018 by a Phase 2 project proposal. Successful proposals will receive up to 15 million euros from European funds as well as an equal amount of matching funds from national sources. Project team members are joining one of the biggest maritime events in the world  linking international shipping industry, research and industrial innovation stakeholders with the Greek shipowners, who operate the largest fleet globally. MaRITeC-X project representatives from MaRINeM, partner of our project, will promote the project's objectives and our 2030 vision and forge collaborations with important stakeholders worldwide bringing them onboard Teaming Phase 2. The 2nd knowledge transfer workshop of MaRITeC-X successfully took place on the 16th and 17th of May at the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), where all the MaRITeC-X partners participated along with the Co-Chair of the MaRITeC-X Advisory Board and the representative of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping. It is worth noting that the participation of the head of the Advisory Board was sponsored by the British High Commission in Nicosia, Cyprus, which has strongly supported the MaRITeC-X project from the beginning. MaRITeC-X project team launches the second Knowledge transfer workshop with our advanced Teaming partner the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI) of the University of Southampton, UK. SMMI is a unique, internationally recognised centre of excellence for research, innovation and education and will be guiding closely MaRITeC-X into its own unique path of growth and excellence. The knowledge transfer workshop in Southampton, the last of a series of two events organised by our UK and Irish partners, will be hosted at the Boldrewood Innovation Campus, f the University of Southampton on the 16 & 17 May, 2018.

Our project continues and further expands its commitment to bring on board and create synergies with all academic instituions in Cyprus and beyond. Mr. Alexandros Josephides of the Cyprus Shipping Chamber and chair of our project’s Advisory Board presented elements of MaRITeC-X project to 200 shipping executives and students during the "Maritime Forum Day" organized by Frederick University on Friday 27/4. Alexandros presented the importance of establishing a Centre of Excellence such as the MaRITeC-X that will bring together existing and new R&D capacities in the island of Cyprus and provide a first class employment opportunity to local and foreign researchers. MARINA Project international Workshop titled “What actions are needed for sustainable Maritime RTDI by 2030?” was organized by the Cyprus Neuroscience & Technology Institute (CNTI) and XPRO Consulting at the House of Arts and Literature in Larnaca on 11 April, 2018. This international workshop which was launched with the support of the Larnaka Municipality and the Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean (Mar.In.E.M.) coordinator and partner of MaRITeC-X project respectively aimed at discussing the challenges that the maritime industry is facing and defining actions that will enable the industry to become resilient, responsible and sustainable. MaRITeC-X project was presented at the Maritime CIO Forums of 2018 that took place in Limassol on 27 March. During the event that was opened by Natasa Pilides, the newly appointed Deputy Minister of Shipping of the Republic of Cyprus an extensive presentation of our projects vision, current activities and future prospects was provided to an enthusiastic international audience of maritime industry stakeholders. Representative of Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean, partner of MaRITeC-X project, while presenting elements of our strategy, stressed the importance of the digitalisation revolution of the maritime economy and transport and our aspiration to position MaRITeC-X as an important driver of scientific and industrial excellence in this emerging domain globally.
