The official kick-off for our project CMMI / MaRITeC-X was launched last Thursday, October 10 at 10:00 with a press conference at the Radisson Blue Hotel in Larnaca. CMMI / MaRITeC-X which is co-funded by the Cyprus Government and the European Union with € 30 million, aims to establish a Center for Excellence in Maritime and Maritime Research, Innovation and Technology, the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute. This Center will provide practical solutions to the global challenges facing the marine and maritime socioeconomic stakeholders. A social event was successfully organized by the Municipality of Larnaca on the 16th of July in Ancient Kition in Larnaca under the auspices of the Shipping Deputy Minister, aiming at officially announcing the winning of the MaRITeC-X/CMMI project proposal and at providing more information to the public on the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI). The CMMI which will be based in Larnaca will be an independent, international, scientific and business Centre of Excellence for Marine and Maritime activities. Makris, Professor of Mechanical and Ocean Engineering and Director of the Center for Ocean Engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and major political and economic stakeholders in marine and maritime issues. The MaRITeC-X Consortium presented the plan for the establishment of the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute in an extraordinary ceremony that took place on Friday 13th of July, in the evening, at the Visitors’ Centre of the Ancient Kition archaeological area in Larnaka. More than 100 invited guests attended the event entitled “Our Ocean Space Odyssey”, including government officials, members of the parliament, ambassadors, academics and representatives of the marine and maritime industry. MaRITeC-X project launches the event “Our Ocean Space Odyssey” and presents the plan for the establishment of the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI). Friday, 13th of July, at 19:30, in the Visitors’ Centre of the Ancient Kition archaeological area in Larnaka. MaRITeC-X project sets in motion our efforts to build in Cyprus a Centre of Excellence, the Cyprus Marine & Maritime Institute (CMMI). By August 2018, the business plan of the Centre will be submitted to the EU. This will be followed in November 2018 by a Phase 2 project proposal. Successful proposals will receive up to 15 million euros from European funds as well as an equal amount of matching funds from national sources. The 2nd knowledge transfer workshop of MaRITeC-X successfully took place on the 16th and 17th of May at the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute (SMMI), where all the MaRITeC-X partners participated along with the Co-Chair of the MaRITeC-X Advisory Board and the representative of the Deputy Ministry of Shipping. It is worth noting that the participation of the head of the Advisory Board was sponsored by the British High Commission in Nicosia, Cyprus, which has strongly supported the MaRITeC-X project from the beginning.
