MaRITeC-X in the spotlight at the MARINA Workshop!

Representatives of the Maritime Institute of Eastern Mediterranean (Mar.In.E.M) participated in the MARINA Mobilization and Mutual Learning (MML) Workshop, which was organized on the 21st of February, at the Water Board Of Nicosia, by the Institute of Neuroscience and Technology of Cyprus (CNTI) in cooperation with XPRO Consulting and aimed at providing answers to the central question “How could we develop marine biotechnology as a source of local and sustainable economy in Cyprus?”. Mar.In.E.M representatives presented the project “Marine and Maritime Research Innovation and Technology Centre of Excellence-MaRITeC-X”, the Consortium, the objectives and areas of activities as well as the main tasks, deliverables and outputs of the project, stressing that this Centre would render Marine Biotechnology a viable source of local economy in Cyprus through:

  • the promotion of synergies in terms of RTDI between Blue Economy sectors such as aquaculture, coastal and maritime tourism, maritime surveillance, including the creation of Marine Protected Areas and Artificial Reefs
  • the design, development and commercialization of cutting-edge technologies for the marine and maritime industry

The organizers and participants were also informed on the values and principles on the basis of which MaRITeC-X is currently being designed, namely:

  • Transparency
  • Inclusiveness of as many stakeholders as possible
  • Societal engagement
  • Ethics compliance & gender balancing

Finally, it is worth noting that cooperation between the MaRITeC-project and the MARINA project was encouraged through the joint organization of another workshop which will be held on the 11th of April 2018 at the House of Arts and Literature in Larnaka, addressing the question “What Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) actions are needed to make Research, Technological Development and Innovation (RTDI) a key factor for a Sustainable Blue Economy at national and international level”?
